Well this season will definitely keep us on our toes! Our first meet of the summer ended during the breastroke event. Delays due to thunder and lightning resulted in the decision to reschedule our meet against Beaurepaire Pool until next Tuesday July 2nd, with warm up at 6:30pm and the meet to begin where we left off at 7:00pm. We will finish the breastroke event and then move on to the backstroke, fly and remaining relays. We everyone that is available to be there! The score was very close when the meet stopped and we need as many points as we can get to hopefully win!
Our second meet will be Wednesday July 3rd at Beaconsfield Heights Pool. Participation in two meets back to back will give us all a chance to be together on deck and solidify our team spirit. It is this spirit that makes our team so special. RSVP messages will go out shortly for each of these upcoming meets. Any parent who can volunteer at either of the meets please advise Lynn Bourdeau at the following address: lbourd@hotmail.com. For every meet we require at least 10 officials every week and we must advise the other team by Monday afternoon prior to each meet. Your involvement is always essential to all our meets. Hope to see you next Tuesday at Beaurepaire pool and next Wednesday at Beaconsfield Heights pool. Please note that the dolphin practice usually held on Tuesday will be cancelled next week Tuesday July 2nd because of the Beaurepaire re-match. Every year the Dolphins run BBQ and Bakesales during the meets that we host. This helps to cover the cost of ribbons for the meets that we host, a portion of the coaches salaries and incidentals such a team outings and special events, and a portion of the buses we take to
Sections and Finals. Without a pool it is impossible to host meets so we have resorted to participating in a few Westmount events and running our Baketables at those events. Family Day, even in the cold and rain, was a great success for us: everyone brought abundant baked goods and we found plenty of hungry customers. St-Jean, this past Monday was moderately successful, however we had less baking and the heat made baked goods seem far less appealing. Even so, we still managed to find lots of hungry people and sold until just before the start of the Scouts’ BBQ. On Canada Day we are resuming a tradition we started 2 years ago: the BBQ and Bakesale during the afternoon Westmount celebrations taking place between 12noon-4pm. This is a very successful event for us but we need every Dolphin member that is in town to be present: 1) We need your baked goods or innovative treats: fruit brochettes on a hot day would be “hot” sellers; candy brochettes would also be popular; slices of watermelon sell out in the sun; creations with marshmallows are mouth-watering! Use your imagination. Of course, cupcakes are always a hit and cookies and squares are too...but if you are thinking it a tad too hot to bake, think of a no-bake tasty solution. 2) We need you: please sign up every available member of your family to the following tasks: BBQers...adults who love to work the fire...you know who you are! BBQ assistants...kids or adults who can package up burgers and dogs for distribution BBQ sales...adults or older kids working the cash BAKESALE...adults or kids who work the cash and greet customers to the baketable 3) Available Shifts: 10:30-12noon: set up; BBQ prep 11:30-1:30pm: 1st Bakesale shift; 1st BBQ shift 1:30pm-3:30pm: 2nd Bakesale shift; 2nd BBQ shift 3:30-5pm: 3rd shift to help with clean up Please sign up at westmount.dolphins@gmail.comwith your preference of shift. We want to ensure that everyone has a chance to have a break; so that everyone takes turns and makes this a fun day of fundraising for all. The Dolphins participated for the first time in the St-Jean festivities held in Westmount Park on Monday.
We want to thank everyone who brought baked goods to sell and who came out to help sell the delicious treats in the sweltering heat. We had a nice shady spot near the area where our “Guards without H2O” organized some water-filled games to help keep kids cool. The Dolphins raised just under $300, which was quite a bit less than we had made in the shivering cold of Family Day but we attributed that to the smaller amount of baking (so many Dolphins were away this past weekend) and the heat: given the choice between the ice cream trolley (who set up beside us) and a cupcake, most kids went for the ice cream. That said, we sold nearly every crumb!! We look forward to a bigger turnout of Dolphins families (baking and people to work) on Canada Day to help make our BBQ and Bakesale a success! An email will go out shortly with more information. Look forward to seeing you all at T-shirt day this afternoon at 4:30pm (just before the 10 and unders practice) in Westmount Park (behind the playground where the swimmers did land-training). We also look forward to cheering our swimmers on Wednesday night at Beaurepaire Pool! Go Dolphins Go! There are some important dates coming for the Dolphins in the next few days:

This message is for the Dolphin parents that would be interested in attending an
officials clinic tomorrow evening at Beacon Hill, 110 Harwood Gate, Beaconsfield. As the parent of a swimmer it is important to have some knowledge of the sport to be able to support them through their progress. In our league, ALPS, we have a great group of experienced instructors who are looking forward to working with all parents interested in attending the ALPS officials clinics tomorrow evening. Regardless of whether you are new to officiating or have worked at swimming meets in the past you are all welcome to attend. Registration begins at 6:30 and the clinics begin at 7 p.m. The training will continue until 10 p.m. so each participant will have the opportunity to attend 3 different clinics if they wish (or 2 if they take the Excel Scoresheet clinic). Each clinic takes approximately 50 minutes. For planning purposes, it is always helpful if people pre-register. However, anyone that shows up at Beacon Hill is more than welcome and will be accommodated in the clinics in which they wish to participate. To pre-register, please send me an email Lynn Bourdeau at lbourd@hotmail.com and let me know which clinics you would like to attend . Hello Everyone,
One of the special aspects of our league, the Association of Lakeshore Pools (ALPS) is the dedication and enthusiasm of the parent-volunteers. Parent-volunteers are integral part of the Dolphins program: without you, the parents, the program and competitions could not happen. At our Wednesday evening meets each team must provide a particular number of officials (volunteers) to take different tasks around the pool deck to ensure the meet runs smoothly. A meet requires as many as 35-40 parent- volunteers! There are many tasks and they all require a little bit of training. To that end, our league offers some training events to prepare for the season. The first training event is the REFEREE CLINIC: What: A refresher for experienced referees in the particularities of ALPS rules and an opportunity for new referees to learn this important task Who: ALPS Referees, starters, meet managers, ALPS reps, and interested individuals When: Wednesday June 12, 2013 7pm Where: East Concession Room of the Pointe-Claire Arena (Bob Birnie) across from Pointe Claire Aqatic Centre, corner of Mayrand and Douglas-Shand. The next training event is the OFFICIALS CLINIC: What: A series of “mini-clinics” offered for all the tasks (except Referee) for a swim meet Who: All those interested in learning some of the tasks around the pool deck When: Wednesday, June 19, 2013 (time to be confirmed) Where: TBA Mark these dates on your calendar if you are interested. We will advise you soon of more details for the Officials Clinic. If you cannot attend the Officials Clinic don’t despair, many of the tasks can be learned during the briefing just before the start of each meet. This is fun way to get involved in the great sport of swimming! Go Dolphins Go! ***Un message français à suivre*** Hello Dolphins, This will be the first full weekend of Dolphins practices. We would like to take this time to remind everyone that this summer, wherever we are swimming, we are guests. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND AT BEN WEIDER POOL...PLEASE READ THROUGH CAREFULLY 1) Please remove your shoes whenever you walk out onto the deck from either entrance. 2) FRIDAYS--Please enter from the side door Note: this door must remain locked and closed when there is not someone waiting to let you in. The first practice for the Dolphins was tonight and it was a great success!
At least 50 swimmers were on hand at Ben Weider JCC this evening to kick off the summer swimming season! Many were new to the team, including many who had just registered this week, bring our total number of swimmers up to almost 90! Welcome to new and old for what we think will be a summer full of fun! Practices continue this week and we will have more information to come tomorrow about land-training so stay tuned. Friday we will be back at Ben Weider JCC from 4-6pm Saturday, at Ben Weider JCC: we invite our new swimmers and those returning swimmers who are not participating yet in a winter swimming team to come out for some special smaller groups for more personalized training with the coaches and CIT's. Sunday, Ben Weider JCC: we had a late start tonight because the group before us likes to linger in the water. With that in mind, until June 23, Sunday practices will start at 6:15pm. Remember: No Pool...No Problem! Go Dolphins Go! |
