Swimming
Swimming is offered for youth from ages 5 to 17.
Minimum requirements for new members: for those under 8 years old they must be comfortable in deep water and be able to swim 25 metres unaided in any fashion; for those 9 years old and older they must be comfortable in deep water and be able to swim 50 metres unaided in at least one of the four recognized strokes. Usually this requires the child to have the equivalent of Red Cross Level 5 or higher.
During training the swimmers master the basic elements of the four recognized strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, then apply what they have learned in weekly swimming competitions.
During competition the children swim in the following age groups:
8 years old and under
9-10 years old
11-12 years old
13-14 years old
15 and over
A swimmer's age is determined by their age as of June 24, which is the official start date for the summer league, ALPS.

GUPPIES
In the 8 and under category we offer a program called Guppies which permits those swimmers under 8 years old who are really new to swimming to master the techniques in a more play-oriented fashion. These swimmers may not always choose to race in the weekly meets until they feel ready. At that age they may also be accompanied by a Coach or CIT during their race to give them confidence. Parents should register those children as 8 and under. They will be assessed during the first practices of the season and be placed in the Guppy group if they are not ready for the 8 and under racing practice.
