SWIMMING
Swimming is offered for youth from ages 5 to 17.
Minimum requirements for new members: Those under 8 years old must be comfortable in deep water and be able to swim 25m unaided in any fashion; those 9 years and older must be comfortable in deep water and be able to swim 50m unaided in at least one of the four recognized strokes. Usually this requires the child to have the equivalent of Red Cross Level 5 or higher.
During training the swimmers master the basic elements of the four recognized strokes — front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly — then apply what they have learned in weekly swimming competitions.
During competition, the athletes swim in the following age groups:
8 years old and under
9-10 years old
11-12 years old
13-14 years old
15 and over
A swimmer's age is determined by their age as of June 24, which is the official start date for the summer league, ALPs.
GUPPIES
In the 8 and under category, we offer a program called Guppies which permits younger swimmers who are really new to swimming to master the techniques in a more play-oriented fashion. These swimmers may not always choose to race in the weekly meets until they feel ready. Or, if they so choose, they may be accompanied by a Coach or CIT during their race to give them confidence. They will be assessed during the first practices and be placed in the Guppie group if they are not quite ready for racing practice.
